Once I'd figured out how to get the damn thing out, I found that the almost dead battery was dated 2009 and was a Citroen branded battery. The car is a 57 plate. Not sure if 2009 was expiry or manufactured date.

The 5a fuse located on the strip next to the battery was responsible for the lack of power in the OBD2 socket. I have a blue cable with the number 4059 leading to it. I also checked the masses that lead to the left threshold, they turned out to be good and I had a suspicion that there might be a lack of mass !!!.
On this side of the silver pedal housing you first need to take out plug 'A' in the pic below. Then the central pin 'B' on the switch that comes through the holes is split so you can squeeze it together and push it out the other side. Don't worry about it falling down as its attached to the plug on this side by the wire in between.
